On a whim last night I created an account on Digg called McCain08. I did it for the same reasons anyone does something on the internet, because I was bored and was looking for attention.

I got the attention I was looking for and moreso. I began posting the following two Talking Points, copied verbatim from McCain’s Action Center:

John McCain has a comprehensive economic plan that will create millions of good American jobs, ensure our nation’s energy security, get the government’s budget and spending practices in order, and bring relief to American consumers.

There are serious issues at stake in this election, and serious differences between the candidates. And we will argue about them, as we should. But it should remain an argument among friends; each of us struggling to hear our conscience, and heed its demands; each of us, despite our differences, united in our great cause, and respectful of the goodness in each other.

After browsing and posting for under 30 minutes my account was banned. Not only did they ban the account I was posting on, McCain08, they banned my other two year old Digg account that has never posted a single comment, Kerner, and they blocked Digg from my work’s IP address locking it out from every single computer at my job. All that comes up when trying to access the site is:

An unknown fatal exception has occurred

Whoa! Something blew up. If you think you reached this error in error please do not hesitate to contact support.

I emailed them asking why they did this and they replied:

Your account was reported to us as being in violation of our Terms of Service (http://digg.com/tos) for posting offensive comments. Because we must be vigilant in protecting against activities that compromise the Digg community, this decision is final and irreversible.

Now I am not a McCain supporter. I posted these comments out of a deep sense of irony; the Action Center talking points are vague and canned. I thought posting them was funny. They are not, however, in any way offensive. There is no justification for the censorship that Digg has shown. There is no just cause to ban two accounts and an entire block of computers for posting two pro-McCain statements.
