So based on the response (or lack thereof) to my last post I’m suspecting that no one actually knows what the media is referring to when they say our government’s bailout money is “taxpayer dollars.” Perhaps I’m ignorant on the matter but I’ve looked long and hard across the internet and am unable to determine where this “taxpayer money” is coming from. I’ve decided it is imaginary money.

I believe we’re bailing out major corporations with money that doesn’t really exist. Just like the problem that got us into this mess in the first place, our government is going into debt inventing dollars to save our banks, automotive industry, unaffordable mortgages, etc.

Our government is getting itself further in debt with money that doesn’t exist. That doesn’t bother anyone else?

Update: Crazy On Tap sums up my position nicely:

its like schroendingers cat, nobody officially knows whether the money exists or not until the moment I actually have to pay it out.  when the moment comes, suddenly the waveform collapses and we can all see the truth.

the banks, finance companies and investment funds and other lunatic organisations have created *trillions* of dollars worth of of imaginary money, and the government is attempting to ensure that the moment at which the waveform collapses never happens, and they are trying to do this by *pretending that the imaginary money is real*

this will cost them billions upon billions upon billions of dollars and it *will* ultimately fail simply because of the sheer amount of imaginary money created.

  1. Don’t stop there, my friend.  All our money is imaginary.  Not just the subsystems that caused the current crisis, but the entire economy is built on electronic I.O.U’s and inherently valueless fiat currency.  This has bothered me for years, but I try not to think about it too much…

  1. I have a hard time calling my salary imaginary. I will agree with you that my 401k is getting to that point. It’s based on stocks, bonds and other things which I don’t really fully grep.

All that said, my bank account may or may not exist in real greenbacks but right now I know I can go to the bank and request however much is in there and they can give it to me.

I don’t believe the bailout money really ever existed outside of computers and concepts.

  1. nate… in reality what is paper money but green paper… if things go really bad the paper won’t be worth anything either.
