Do I need auto insurance prior to purchasing a new car? I know it’s illegal to drive a car without insurance but with a new car is there a window where you have something like the dealer’s insurance?

I know you have a window to get your license/registration/inspection with a new car. Does the same thing apply to the auto insurance?

Update (5/30/2009): For those curious, you do need auto insurance to sign any paperwork and to get the car registered through the DMV. It can, however, be purchased the same day you buy your car.
