Police protect NJIT from Photography

If you want to take pictures on campus, don’t expect any cooperation from some public safety officers. Several students have reported being questioned and ordered to stop by NJIT police while taking photographs on campus.

“I was taking shots of the clubs” said Samer Karam, a graduate student, who was taking pictures at the Club Fair last Monday when he was approached by a police officer. “I was told [by the officer] ‘you have to sign in at Public Safety…everyone has to sign in.’”

“I felt hassled,” said Nate Renrek, “The police were aggressive.” Renrek, a Rutgers student who dorms at NJIT, was approached by police on Warren Street while taking pictures of a sculpture outside of Weston Hall. He was told by the officers that he was not permitted to pictures on campus. When Mr. Renrek asked the officers why he couldn’t take pictures of public property he was told that NJIT is not a public university. “They asked how long I’d been here. I said I’d been here since 2001 and they said ‘You don’t know it’s not a public university and you’ve been here since 2001?’”.

But, Public Safety was not aware of this rule. After asking about the policy at the Public Safety office, Renrek found that he did not need permission to take pictures of the campus, although he might still be questioned by police officers if he is seen taking photographs on campus.

When informed of the incidents, Police Chief Michael Kirk said “I would like to see the officer and straighten him out.” He believes that the officers may have behaved this way as the result of the Homeland Security bulletins that the Department receives and plans on speaking with all of NJIT’s police officers on the matter. He also added, “The bottom line is there is no rule.”

The article is referencing this incident and my followup with the police.
